Original "Pain Within" concept and rope styling by Midori
Pain Within II: Tumor explores the memory of a childhood experience of illness, the self-imposed protocol of silence and emotional repression around that illness, and finally the purging and shattering of that prohibition.
Backstory. My frequent collaborative partner, visual and installation artist Midori, had just wrapped a day of stylist work on a photo set where she’d been paid to create beauty. She told me of her vision of using rope sculpturally to manifest on the outside all the ugly and pain people harbor inside. This resonated strongly for me. Together, we began manifesting this vision in photographic portraits.
